. what struck me yesterday with john boehner he was saying as we approach the fiscal cliff, boehner was saying yesterday that the bottom line for republicans after this election is the same as it's been for 22 years. that is, that any kind of income tax hike, especially for the wealthy, is off the table for them. do you have a sense of what the white house is thinking is on the table? we approach january 1st. is it that they are really eager mainly to strike a grand bargain they can sell as a major bipartisan achievement? is the idea of fighting past january 1st if necessary to get rid of the bush tax cuts for the wealthy americans more of a priority for them? >> no. i think they want a deal if they can get it. you're right to listen closely to john boehner, because what he had is he'll accept some revenues in the context of tax reform, a big, wonderful, fuzzy nebulous idea. what he won't expect initially is a change in the rates. of course, that's what it's about. it's about the rates for the highest income earners. and that's where john boehner is refusing to start out in the nego

really got it. howard dean revolutionized the use of the web. john kerry went forward on that aspect. but boy, the bush campaign had it going. in 2008, the mccain campaign was up and down. the organization after its, what they had in 2004 was lost in 2008. it had to be rebuilt by the romney campaign, but only after their able to get the republican nomination in april. it was late in part because of super pacs, which kept the process going much longer than it ever normally goes. as long as you and i have been watching this and before that, when a candidate started losing primaries, other donors close their checkbooks. you run out of money and you drop out of the race. what is happening is, they kept gingrinch going for a while. the process went longer and longer. romney had to go so much further and longer -- here is a guy who is probably by nature -- when we met for him when he ran for the senate in 1994, that is where he was. he has to run so much longer and further to the right than he ever dreamed and in part because of the super pac effort. then you had -- i guess the final thing

a split and one of the interesting ways you can follow it has to do with what -- john boehner versus paul ryan. boehner is pushing for conference shame, republican congresswoman rogers while ryan is pushing tom price who used to run the conservative caucus in the house. if most of the caucus is getting behind them then it's a sign they'll dig in their heels. if they're going with boehner, it's a sign they'll deal. >> i want to bring in a democrat on both the armed services committee and select committee on intelligence and the fiscal cliff if i might. do you think the republicans will come to play? >> i believe that they will. it's my hope that everyone has gotten the message loud and clear that the american people expect us to compromise, democrats and republicans coming together to solve the fiscal cliff issue but in a balanced way and that is certainly what president obama has campaigned on protecting a strong middle class, allowing the tax cuts to expire above $250,000, but we can't be afraid to compromise but we can do that without compromising our principles. >> is part of this deal

. a senior official is telling cnn details about general john allen's relationship with a socialite at the center of both investigations. this is a web of characters and connections that is impacting the team in charge of america's security. it is also delaying when the world will know who will be the next leader of nato. general john allen was to have a confirmation hearing this thursday on his way to becoming the supreme allied commander. that, of course, is now on hold while allen denied doing anything wrong, he is under investigation for potentially inappropriate e-mails he sent to this woman, jill kelley, the tampa socialite triggered the petraeus investigation. we'll get to exactly how in just a moment. the defense department's inspector general is going through e-mails allen and kelley sent to each other. >> the primary thing is that, you know, she wants her privacy protected. and i think that she's going to probably come out at some point and make a statement. >> privacy, of course, for all players involved is just a pipe dream at this point. and just how are they connected?

and republican senators john mccain and lindsay graham. it began to escalate earlier this morning when the senators vowed to stand in the way of the president if -- if he goes ahead and nominates the united nations ambassador susan rice to replace hillary clinton secretary of state. mccain and graham are scathing of rice's early remarks about the deadly attack on the u.s. diplomats in benghazi, libya. >> this is about the role she played around four dead americans when it seems to be that the story coming out of the administration. and she's the point person, is so disconnected to reality. i don't trust her. and the reason i don't trust her is because i think she knew better. and if she didn't know better, she shouldn't be the voice of america. somebody has got to start paying a price around this place. >> let's see what happens here. but we will do whatever's necessary to block the nomination that's within our power as far as susan rice is concerned. >> all right. listen to the president's very, very angry response to senators mccain and graham during that white house news conference.

[laughter] i didn't say it was a bad decision, i just said it says something about the challenger. i think this is an additional problem. it is easier for moderate, centrist democrats to feel the republican voters than for i moderate, centrist republicans to feel for democrats. there is a lot of stuff to talk about. i think in the short term, you are seeing some immediate republican flexibility on taxes and on dealing with sequestration and the fiscal cliff. i talked to one republican media consultant the other day he said, you know, i think there's a chance that if obama wins comfortably with the electoral college and the underperform in the house or the senate, and clearly the republicans underperformed in the senate, every tossup race with democratic, just as charlie said, every swing tossup state went democratic, magnifying the outcome. if something like that happens, i think republican folks will give a little bit on taxes, because r
